How to determine your dog's personality type

As for us humans there exists standardized tests that can be used to determine the personality of dogs. Just like the human tests these consist of a series of questions about your dog's behavior and reactions in various situations. By answering these questions, you can get valuable insights into your dog's personality traits.  

The three most widely used dog personality tests are:

1) The Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) test has been developed by Dr. James A. Serpell, a renowned animal behaviorist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. C-BARQ is a widely used tool for assessing various aspects of a dog's behavior and temperament through owner-reported observations. 

2) The Monash Canine Personality Questionnaire (MCPQ) test was created by Dr. Melissa J. Starling and Dr. Paul D. McGreevy, who are researchers in the field of animal behavior and welfare at Monash University in Australia.

3) The Dog Personality Questionnaire (DPQ) test was developed by Dr. Samuel D. Gosling, a psychologist known for his work in personality psychology, and Dr. Amanda Claire Jones, a researcher in the field of animal behavior - at the University of Texas at Austin.

Understanding the various aspects of a dog's personality, such as their fearfulness, aggression, responsiveness to training and excitability give us knowledge that are of great help in areas such as training, behavior modification, and understanding the human-animal bond.

The test takes roughly 10 minutes to fill out - and the personality types are determined based on the 4 combinations of the 4 factors:

1) Fearful - Bold

2) Unfriendly - Agreeable (towards people and animals)

3) Rebellious - Conscientious (controllable/trainable)

4) Intravert - Extravert
